Chapter 5

The Sins of an Airbnb Host

As Tracy’s mum taught her, there are sins of commission and sins of omission. A sin of commission is doing something that you shouldn’t have. A sin of omission is not doing something that you should have. What we experienced was a sin of omission of epic proportions.

Verona

Pulling up alongside the fountain in the Piazza delle Erbe, the guide drew our attention to the building in front of us.

“Here you see some of the most important Fresco art in the city,” she informed us, directing our attention to the paintings on the outside of the upper levels, above a restaurant.

“Oh, we know that building,” Tracy informed her, “that’s our bedroom window.”

Mille Miglia

The following day was a special one in Verona, when the Mille Miglia came to town. The event, meaning ‘thousand miles’, is an annual vintage car race limited to cars produced no later than 1957.

Modena

If you are a car enthusiast, you can make an appointment with Maserati and, for 50 Euros, join about 20 like-minded people to be shepherded around the factory. If you are a Maserati owner, with a direct line to Luca, your experience is different.

Florence

“What on earth is going on there?” Tracy said, looking at the fourth side of the garden, the end facing the lemon grove.

“I don’t know, but it’s a bloody big building site,” I observed, looking at the construction sitting right on the boundary of the property, overlooking the pool.
