Chapter 2

The Travels Begin

Sometimes the routes we take to get to places when we travel seem counter-intuitive, at least they do to me. The first long haul flight of our senior gap year adventures was a good example. The best value route from Sydney to Orlando, we were told, was on Japan Air, via Tokyo.

As we settled into the flight, the boys paid us a visit at our seats and Grandma Tracy invited them to share hers. The beautiful scene of a grandmother doting over her, at that moment, overindulged grandchildren, was interrupted by the cabin flight attendant.

Tokyo

While my mind tried to compute how the route could make any sense geographically, a thought occurred to me. None of us had ever been to Japan.

Kennedy Space Center

As the film finished, the screen slowly rose and there in front of us was Space Shuttle Atlantis. We walked through the opening and into the display hall to examine the incredible machine, not as large as Apollo 8, but equally impressive.
